Oil changes: how often and what they cost

The old 3,000-mile rule is out of date for most engines. Here is what AAA and price guides say, plus what matters in Utah.

Key facts

Severe service: often the Utah case

AAA lists severe service conditions as mostly short trips (5 miles or less), extremely hot, cold or dusty climates, sustained stop-and-go driving, and heavy loads or towing. If those describe your driving, follow the severe schedule in your manual. Newer cars with oil-life monitors shorten the interval automatically. (Source: AAA Automotive) Utah winters, summer heat in the south, dusty roads and towing can fit those categories; check your manual to decide.

Oil level and warning lights

AAA notes that low oil can cause engine damage your warranty may not cover. (Source: AAA Automotive) Your owner's manual explains how the oil level should be checked; a shop can check it at any service visit. If the red oil pressure light comes on, do not keep driving: stop as soon as it is safe and have the vehicle inspected by a certified (ASE) mechanic. See oil pressure light or oil-life alert.

Safety first. This page is general information, not a diagnosis or repair instructions. Do not try to fix brakes, steering, tires or warning-light problems yourself based on this site. Have a certified (ASE) mechanic inspect the vehicle. If braking or steering feels wrong, or a red warning light comes on, stop driving as soon as it is safe and have the vehicle inspected before you drive it again; if you are unsure, have it towed.

FAQ

Do I really need an oil change every 3,000 miles?

Usually not. AAA says most engines now go 5,000 to 7,500 miles. Follow your owner's manual, and use the severe schedule if you mostly take short trips, tow, or drive in extreme temperatures.

How much is a synthetic oil change?

Kelley Blue Book puts it at about $65 to $125; AutoZone says $60 to $100.
