- AAA suggests having brakes inspected at each tire rotation, typically every other oil change. (Source: AAA Automotive)
- Brake fluid: follow the manual; if no interval is given, AAA recommends replacing it every two years. (Source: AAA Newsroom)
Warning signs
AAA also lists a parking brake with no resistance, longer stopping distances, a clear-yellow oily fluid leak, a burning smell, and an illuminated ABS light as reasons to get the brakes checked. (Source: AAA Automotive) Brake work is safety work: this guide does not give repair steps, and any of these signs should be inspected by a certified (ASE) mechanic.
Utah factors
Long mountain and canyon descents, stop-and-go freeway traffic, and winter road salt are all relevant here. AAA notes that hard braking and stop-and-go traffic shorten pad life, and that road salt can rust and corrode brake components. (Source: AAA Automotive; AAA Automotive Engineering)
FAQ
How much does a brake job cost?
AAA says pads and rotors cost about $250 to $500 per axle, or $500 to $1,000 for the whole car. Shop prices vary.
How often should brake fluid be changed?
Follow your owner's manual. If it does not say, AAA recommends every two years.
Can this site tell me what is wrong with my car?
No. Utah Auto Help is general information, not a diagnosis. Brakes, steering, tires, warning lights and oil pressure are safety issues that need a professional inspection by a certified (ASE) mechanic. If the car does not feel safe to drive, stop driving and have it inspected or towed.
