Brakes squealing when you stop

AAA says a high-pitched noise when braking can be a sign the brakes have worn thin.

Stop and get it inspected. Do not put it off. Have a certified (ASE) mechanic inspect the brakes soon. If the noise turns to grinding, the pedal feels different, or the car takes longer to stop, stop driving as soon as it is safe and have it inspected before driving again.

What the sources say

AAA says a high pitch or grinding noise is a strong indicator the brakes have worn thin, and that very little pad may remain. (Source: AAA Automotive)

Next step

Have a certified (ASE) mechanic inspect it. This guide does not diagnose vehicles and does not give repair steps for safety systems. For costs, see the brakes guide and the cost guide.

Safety first. This page is general information, not a diagnosis or repair instructions. Do not try to fix brakes, steering, tires or warning-light problems yourself based on this site. Have a certified (ASE) mechanic inspect the vehicle. If braking or steering feels wrong, or a red warning light comes on, stop driving as soon as it is safe and have the vehicle inspected before you drive it again; if you are unsure, have it towed.

FAQ

Can this site tell me what is wrong with my car?

No. Utah Auto Help is general information, not a diagnosis. Brakes, steering, tires, warning lights and oil pressure are safety issues that need a professional inspection by a certified (ASE) mechanic. If the car does not feel safe to drive, stop driving and have it inspected or towed.
