Utah registration renewal and the emissions test

In the five testing counties, the emissions result is the step most likely to hold up a renewal.

  1. Check whether your model year needs a test this year (see your county schedule).
  2. Get tested no more than two months before your renewal date. (Source: Utah Division of Motor Vehicles)
  3. The county health department sends the result to the DMV electronically; the DMV must receive it before it can complete the registration. (Source: Utah Division of Motor Vehicles)
  4. Renew online with your VIN and PIN, at a DMV office, at an On the Spot Renewal Station, or by automatic renewal. (Source: Utah Division of Motor Vehicles)

What to bring for a first-time Utah title

The Tax Commission lists the title (if not held by a lienholder), most recent registration, a VIN inspection where required, an emissions inspection where required, a safety inspection where required, and valid ID. A VIN inspection is required for vehicles titled in Utah for the first time; a signed safety or emissions inspection can serve as VIN verification for cars, trucks and motorcycles. Buying from a dealer

Dealers must make sure vehicles meet inspection requirements before sale, and an emissions test, if required, must be within eleven months before the sale. (Source: Utah Division of Motor Vehicles)
